Table Top Roleplaying Games as Reading Promotion

Attracting youth and young adults to libraries is a challenge. Lack of interest, social isolation, decline in reading proficiency, and attention spans are major concerns. One way to tackle this problem on a local scale is by gathering youth and young adults around a table and playing a Table Top Role-playing Game (TTRPG). The most famous TTRPG that is widely known is Dungeons and Dragons (DnD). Unlike usual board games, TTRPGs, including DnD, take more than one session to complete, and can be expanded indefinitely if there is demand. The main benefit of such games is that they promote player imagination, group work, and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, complicated game rules promote reading game rules at first, but later encompass other types of literature. In this presentation, the speaker will share positive experiences of Jurmala Central Library (Latvia) in this endeavor.
