One Book for All: Why Accessibility Matters for Libraries
The European Accessibility Act is transforming the e-book landscape — and libraries have a unique opportunity to lead this change.
This presentation introduces an inclusive publishing project by the Lithuanian Audiosensory
Library (LAB), which works with publishers to open the e-book market to print-impaired readers — about 10% of the population.
Over the past 18 months, LAB has helped publishers produce more than 170 accessible EPUB 3 titles, making “one book for all” a practical reality. Drawing on this experience, the session will explore:
- What inclusive publishing means and how accessible e-book features benefit every reader, not just print-disabled.
- How libraries can influence the e-book market, advocate for reader’s needs and build meaningful partnerships with publishers.
- Practical takeaways for libraries, from improving e-lending systems and considering accessibility metadata, to raising awareness and digital literacy.
This presentation is an invitation to rethink what a digital book can be, and the role it plays in ensuring everyone can read in the way that works best for them.
