Information specialist of the 21st century – what competencies does he need?

In the rapidly changing labor market, specialized knowledge and skills are less significant than universal competences of the 21st century: literacy, proactivity, the ability to adapt to a constantly changing world, and the ability to learn continuously. This is relevant for an Information Specialist who is a professional in managing, analyzing and interpreting large amounts of information. 21st century competencies are universal, non-subject competencies that interact and are closely related, also known as the “6C” competencies, such as character education, creativity, collaboration, citizenship education, communication, critical thinking and problem solving. In December 2024, a survey of current students and graduates of the Information Management study program was conducted at Šiauliai State College with the aim of assessing the needs for improving the competencies of information specialists. The Information Management study program is the only bachelor’s study program in Lithuania that prepares information specialists and librarians. Four areas of competence were studied: media and information literacy, communication, information technology, management and communication. The study identified the TOP 15 competencies and skills relevant to information specialists.
