Librarianship Today – Professional Growth for a Sustainable Society
Libraries have always been places where knowledge, learning, and community meet. Today, their role extends far beyond access to books or digital resources. Modern libraries are evolving into sustainable organisations that adapt to social change, promote inclusion, and help build resilient communities. Their sustainability lies not only in managing resources wisely, but also in remaining relevant and trusted in times of rapid transformation.
At the centre of this process stands the librarian. The profession is changing—from caretakers of collections to facilitators of learning, digital inclusion, and civic engagement. Continuous professional growth, supported by lifelong learning and international cooperation, has become essential for maintaining both institutional vitality and social impact.
The presentation draws on several examples that illustrate how professional development strengthens innovation in library services and ensures their capacity to respond to emerging societal needs. It argues that librarianship today is about empowering people, fostering connection, and sustaining the learning ecosystems that make societies thrive.
